Jena Six Mychal Bell Attempts Suicide!

Mychal Bell

Mychal Bell

The only teen to be tried in the infamous Jena beating in 2007, Mychal Bell, has reportedly suffered a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the chest. Family members claim that Bell tried to commit suicide in direct response to the negative media coverage related to his December 24 arrest for shoplifting, resisting arrest, and simple assault.

Police in Jena, LA report that Mychal Bell was caught trying to steal several shirts and a pair of jeans from a local department store on Christmas Eve.

Bell is expected to make a full recovery.

FYI: The Origins of Kwanzaa and Its’ Founder, Dr. Ron Everett Karenga

With the African American holiday Kwanzaa upon us, have you ever wondered about its’ origin? What about the creator and founder of Kwanzaa? Who is he?

Dr. Ron Karenga may be vaguely known to you, but to those entrenched in the Black Power Movement of the sixties and seventies, Karenga is well known.

Below is some documentation about the creator of Kwanzaa, circa 1969, regarding Dr. Karenga’s involvement in the sinister activities to dismantle the Black Panther Party, with tragic results:

From The Black Panther Newspaper:

REPUBLIC OF NEW AFRICA DENOUNCES RON EVERETT (KARENGA)

FROM: The Minister of State and Foreign Affairs of the Republic of New

Africa.

TO: Brother Bobby Seale

In the Name of Peace and Power to the People:

Dear Brother Seale,

There was convened in the City of Detroit on April 5, 1969, a meeting of

the legislative assembly of the Republic of New Africa.

At this meeting, it was officially reported that Ron Karenga was

directed to explain the accusation and his responsibility, if any, in

the action that ended in the death of two Panther Brothers on the campus

at U.C.L.A.

Karenga, having failed to respond, was removed from the position of

Minister of Education of the RNA. Please bear in mind that Ron Karenga

was appointed to this position but the appointment was never approved,

neither by the cabinet of RNA nor by the legislative assembly and

therefore held on official position in RNA.

Speaking in the position of Minister of State and Foreign Affairs for

RNA, I have always felt that Ron Karenga represented a great deal less

than the best interests of the Black Liberation struggle against

domestic colonialism, white racism and world-wide imperialism.

Therefore, on the platform during the May 9 week of the Political

Prisoners, I would not hesitate to state such a position (on my

attitude) in the strongest possible language, concerning Ron Karenga.

While as representative of Republic of New Africa the above is my

clear-cut position of Ron Karenga, I am compelled to acknowledge some

apprehensions with regard to the direction the Panthers are taking

politically. I refer specifically to the telephone call from Cleveland

in which, as I have been told, you indicated a willingness to

cooperate if the Republic of New Africa was excluded, or if the Republic

of New Africa denounced Ron Karenga. Since I do not believe that there

can ever come a point in time when the political differences between

blacks will overshadow the four hundred years of inhuman treatment,

stemming from whites, I do not believe that we can presume to cooperate

with whites at the exclusion of blacks.

If there are serious political differences between the Panthers and the

Republic of New Africa, I do not believe they are more serious than the

differences between the blacks and whites in America. I believe there is

room for discussion.

Minister of State and foreign affairs, Yours for Power to the People

Tribute To A Diva: Eartha Kitt, 1927-2008

The Diva of All Divas! Eartha Kitt, Dies at 81

Eartha Kitt
Eartha Kitt

NEW YORK – Eartha Kitt, a sultry singer, dancer and actress who rose from South Carolina cotton fields to become an international symbol of elegance and sensuality, has died, a family spokesman said. She was 81.

Andrew Freedman said Kitt, who was recently treated at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital, died Thursday in Connecticut of colon cancer.

Kitt, a self-proclaimed “sex kitten” famous for her catlike purr, was one of America’s most versatile performers, winning two Emmys and nabbing a third nomination. She also was nominated for several Tonys and two Grammys.

Her career spanned six decades, from her start as a dancer with the famed Katherine Dunham troupe to cabarets and acting and singing on stage, in movies and on television. She persevered through an unhappy childhood as a mixed-race daughter of the South and made headlines in the 1960s for denouncing the Vietnam War during a visit to the White House.

Through the years, Kitt remained a picture of vitality and attracted fans less than half her age even as she neared 80.

When her book “Rejuvenate,” a guide to staying physically fit, was published in 2001, Kitt was featured on the cover in a long, curve-hugging black dress with a figure that some 20-year-old women would envy. Kitt also wrote three autobiographies.

Once dubbed the “most exciting woman in the world” by Orson Welles, she spent much of her life single, though brief romances with the rich and famous peppered her younger years.

After becoming a hit singing “Monotonous” in the Broadway revue “New Faces of 1952,” Kitt appeared in “Mrs. Patterson” in 1954-55. (Some references say she earned a Tony nomination for “Mrs. Patterson,” but only winners were publicly announced at that time.) She also made appearances in “Shinbone Alley” and “The Owl and the Pussycat.”

Her first album, “RCA Victor Presents Eartha Kitt,” came out in 1954, featuring such songs as “I Want to Be Evil,” “C’est Si Bon” and the saucy gold digger‘s theme song “Santa Baby,” which is revived on radio each Christmas.

The next year, the record company released follow-up album “That Bad Eartha,” which featured “Let’s Do It,” “Smoke Gets in Your Eyes” and “My Heart Belongs to Daddy.”

In 1996, she was nominated for a Grammy in the category of traditional pop vocal performance for her album “Back in Business.” She also had been nominated in the children’s recording category for the 1969 record “Folk Tales of the Tribes of Africa.”

Kitt also acted in movies, playing the lead female role opposite Nat King Cole in “St. Louis Blues” in 1958 and more recently appearing in “Boomerang” and “Harriet the Spy” in the 1990s.

On television, she was the sexy Catwoman on the popular “Batman” series in 1967-68, replacing Julie Newmar who originated the role. A guest appearance on an episode of “I Spy” brought Kitt an Emmy nomination in 1966.

“Generally the whole entertainment business now is bland,” she said in a 1996 Associated Press interview. “It depends so much on gadgetry and flash now. You don’t have to have talent to be in the business today.

“I think we had to have something to offer, if you wanted to be recognized as worth paying for.”

Kitt was plainspoken about causes she believed in. Her anti-war comments at the White House came as she attended a White House luncheon hosted by Lady Bird Johnson.

“You send the best of this country off to be shot and maimed,” she told the group of about 50 women. “They rebel in the street. They don’t want to go to school because they’re going to be snatched off from their mothers to be shot in Vietnam.”

For four years afterward, Kitt performed almost exclusively overseas. She was investigated by the FBI and CIA, which allegedly found her to be foul-mouthed and promiscuous.

“The thing that hurts, that became anger, was when I realized that if you tell the truth — in a country that says you’re entitled to tell the truth — you get your face slapped and you get put out of work,” Kitt told Essence magazine two decades later.

In 1978, Kitt returned to Broadway in the musical “Timbuktu!” — which brought her a Tony nomination — and was invited back to the White House by President Jimmy Carter.

In 2000, Kitt earned another Tony nod for “The Wild Party.” She played the fairy godmother in Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Cinderella” in 2002.

As recently as October 2003, she was on Broadway after replacing Chita Rivera in a revival of “Nine.”

She also gained new fans as the voice of Yzma in the 2000 Disney animated feature “The Emperor’s New Groove.’”

In an online discussion at Washingtonpost.com in March 2005, shortly after Jamie Foxx and Morgan Freeman won Oscars, she expressed satisfaction that black performers “have more of a chance now than we did then to play larger parts.”

But she also said: “I don’t carry myself as a black person but as a woman that belongs to everybody. After all, it’s the general public that made (me) — not any one particular group. So I don’t think of myself as belonging to any particular group and never have.”

Kitt was born in North, S.C., and her road to fame was the stuff of storybooks. In her autobiography, she wrote that her mother was black and Cherokee while her father was white, and she was left to live with relatives after her mother’s new husband objected to taking in a mixed-race girl.

An aunt eventually brought her to live in New York, where she attended the High School of Performing Arts, later dropping out to take various odd jobs.

By chance, she dropped by an audition for the dance group run by Dunham, a pioneering African-American dancer. In 1946, Kitt was one of the Sans-Souci Singers in Dunham’s Broadway production “Bal Negre.”

Kitt’s travels with the Dunham troupe landed her a gig in a Paris nightclub in the early 1950s. Kitt was spotted by Welles, who cast her in his Paris stage production of “Faust.”

That led to a role in “New Faces of 1952,” which featured such other stars-to-be as Carol Lawrence, Paul Lynde and, as a writer, Mel Brooks.

While traveling the world as a dancer and singer in the 1950s, Kitt learned to perform in nearly a dozen languages and, over time, added songs in French, Spanish and even Turkish to her repertoire.

“Usku Dara,” a song Kitt said was taught to her by the wife of a Turkish admiral, was one of her first hits, though Kitt says her record company feared it too remote for American audiences to appreciate.

Song titles such as “I Want to be Evil” and “Just an Old Fashioned Girl” seem to reflect the paradoxes in Kitt’s private life.

Over the years, Kitt had liaisons with wealthy men, including Revlon founder Charles Revson, who showered her with lavish gifts.

In 1960, she married Bill McDonald but divorced him after the birth of their daughter, Kitt.

While on stage, she was daringly sexy and always flirtatious. Offstage, however, Kitt described herself as shy and almost reclusive, remnants of feeling unwanted and unloved as a child. She referred to herself as “that little urchin cotton-picker from the South, Eartha Mae.”

For years, Kitt was unsure of her birthplace or birth date. In 1997, a group of students at historically black Benedict College in Columbia, S.C., located her birth certificate, which verified her birth date as Jan. 17, 1927. Kitt had previously celebrated on Jan. 26.

The research into her background also showed Kitt was the daughter of a white man, a poor cotton farmer.

“I’m an orphan. But the public has adopted me and that has been my only family,” she told the Post online. “The biggest family in the world is my fans.”

Excerpts From Nation of Islam Leader Farrakhan On Obama

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan’s exclusive interview with American Urban Radio Networks

[Editor’s note: On December 10, 2008, Minister Farrakhan granted an exclusive interview to April D. Ryan, of American Urban Radio Networks, at the National House in Chicago, Illinois to offer his perspective about current events on a local, national and international scope. The following article contains excerpts of this interview.]

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan
Photo: Kenneth Muhammad

April D. Ryan (AR): We are in some very interesting times. We see your neighbor, literally three blocks away—the president-elect Barack Obama. What say you right now as this nation is faced with two wars post 9/11; and dealing with an economic crisis that we haven’t seen in decades?

The Honorable Minister Louis Farrakhan (HMLF): First, I’m very happy to be the neighbor of the president-elect. We are overjoyed by his tremendous victory. We are thankful to God because that which most of us thought we would never see in our lifetime, He has blessed us to live to see. Barack Obama has shown by his scholarship and his brilliance; along with the team that helped him to win the election, and the team that he is forming as his government, that he has inspired at least 80 percent of the American people with the audacity of hope that he can make a difference.

At the same time that he is our president-elect, the country—from our spiritual vantage point—is under Divine chastisement; judgment. We see it in the weather, in the tremendous storms that are touching this country from the East Coast to the West Coast; to the north and south. We see it in drought. We see it in the destruction of the farmland, and in the greed of corporate America: The inordinate self-interest of people where the nation is not first, but their bottom line is first, so they will close factories and take jobs outside of the country, leaving the American people in the lurch.

Mr. Obama comes to power at a very difficult time; and as you said, this is the worst economic time in decades. The president-elect has said that it will get worse before it gets better, so the social deterioration can result in extreme poverty and joblessness, the increase of lawlessness, and the tendency toward anarchy.

The stimulus package that brother President-elect Barack Obama is working on can help the American people for a time. America is already trillions of dollars in debt, an extraordinary burden that will be on the American people to pay back. The stimulus package that Mr. Obama is proposing that will put the American people back to work and strengthen the infrastructure, the schools and developing a green economy—this is going to be over $1 trillion, so this young man has a tremendous burden on his shoulders, and we must not allow him to shoulder this burden alone. It becomes the duty of everyone who has benefited from living in America to help that brother to help America, if he can, out of the condition that she is in.

AR: Minister Farrakhan, you touched on so many topics in your answer. You touched on the global climate change. You touched on the issue of the stimulus package. You talked about corruption in government. Let’s talk about corruption in government.

We just saw the arrest of the Illinois governor [Rod Blagojevich]; and Barack Obama has called for him to step down. What say you on this? Also, do you feel that the legislature should be able to strip him of his power and [institute a special election for the vacant Senate seat]? Who do you think should be elected to that seat?

HMLF: I think the process can be put in place either to strip the governor of his power, wherein the state legislature may create a law that disallows the governor to choose the next person who will sit in President-elect Obama’s former seat as senator from Illinois. How the government will deal with Gov. Blagojevich is a process that has begun with his arrest. In this country a man is innocent until proved guilty. The U.S. attorney that charged him with all of these things has yet to indict him. There has been talk about what the governor said in their taping of him and what not—let that play out. The citizens of Illinois need a senator.

Corruption is a problem not only in the state of Illinois, but in America and in the world as a whole. President-elect Barack Obama said he will always tell the American people the truth. If he fulfills that promise, what a great president he will be.

We have children that love this country, who, deprived of other avenues of demonstrating their talents and gifts, have joined the armed forces of the Unites States of America. Our children love their country, and they trust their leaders to tell them the truth. On the basis of lies, this country was brought to war with Iraq. Not too long ago, a magazine article highlighted all the lies that were told by President George W. Bush, former Defense Secretary Donald Rumsfeld, Vice President Dick Cheney, and former Secretary of State General Colin Powell to get us into this mess. Look at the horror of the parents who lost their children, or whose children are coming back from this theatre of war: Destroyed—their limbs gone; mentally, a wreck. Their own government is not looking after them as the government should. Barack Obama says he has put somebody in that will look after these soldiers, these sailors, these marines.

The greatest thing Mr. Obama can do is never to misuse the patriotic zeal of America’s children who are willing to die to keep America great and free.

The Origins of Christmas: Part 2

This is another FYI about the origins of Christmas…

The Origins of Christmas: Part 1

Have you ever wondered about the origin of the celebration of Christmas? It is not mentioned in the Bible. Christ’s apostles never mention the event. Where did Santa Claus come from? What is the true meaning of Christmas?

But how is it that Christendom  set the date of December 25th as the birth date of Jesus Christ when there isn’t a sliver of evidence to prove this to be so?

Watch the above video for more insight on this.

Big Three Gets Their Share Of The Bailout Pie!! How Big The Slice? $17.4B!!

GM Headquarters in Detroit

GM Headquarters in Detroit

The Bush Administration has just announced that the White House has approved of loaning Ford, General Motors and Chrysler a share of the economic bailout. In a move that has stunned Republicans, the big three auto-makers were granted a total of $17B to keep their respective companies afloat.

$13.4B will be available this month and in January ’09, $9.41B  goes to GM, and $4B to both Chrysler and Ford. But the Bush Administration has been quick to point out that this is only  a short-term plan for the auto-makers. The incoming Obama Administration will be saddled with the final solution.

The ‘rescue bailout’ does not come without conditions, though.

1. The loan is to be repaid in three years.

2. If a plan isn’t formulated by GM, Ford and Chrysler to rescue themselves by March 31, 2009, then the loan becomes viable and monies repaid immediately.

3. There will be limits on executive compensation.

4. Ford, GM and Chrysler must meet fuel efficiency requirements.

President Bush said regarding the rescue bailout of America’s auto makers that “allowing the auto companies to collapse is not a responsible course of action” adding that bankruptcy would more than likely be ”an unacceptably painful blow to hardworking Americans.”

Jesse Jackson, Jr: “I’m No Snitch!”

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.

Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr.’s office Wednesday told CNN that reports and commentary referring to the congressman as an “informant” and a “snitch” for the FBI on the cable news broadcast Tuesday were false.

This comes after the FBI released startling information concerning Jackson’s role in facilitating the investigation of Gov. Rod Blagojevich. The FBI documents state that Jesse Jackson, Jr. worked closely, and at times, clandestine, with the FBI in gathering information directly related to the charges of federal corruption that Gov. Blagojevich is currently facing.

CNN’s Wolf Blitzer commented that it appeared that Jackson was an “informant” and then subsequent discussion labeled the congressman as a “snitch.” It is too bad that with all the gross shadiness and morally bankrupt double-dealing and stealing that politicians and CEO’s are doing nowadays, none of us can recognize a stand-up citizen anymore.

FINALLY! Someone Brave Enough To Give Bush Da Boot! OOPS! The Shoe!!

Who would have guessed that an Iraqi citizen would have the last word Sunday? President Bush made a farewell visit to Iraq as he prepares to turn over the reigns of the so-called ‘War On Terror” to President -Elect Barack Obama. The legacy that Bush II leaves behind is one that is as controversial and complicated as the Middle East issue in its’ entirety.

On top of all of the eight years of the Bush administration’s force-feeding Americans garbage about how “necessary” the Iraq invasion is, it is ironic and quite fitting that Iraqi citizens have the last word…not Bush!

President-Elect Barack Obama Suggests Blagojevich Resign!

Governor Blagojevich and President-Elect Barack Obama

Governor Blagojevich and President-Electjevich Barack Obama

One day after Illinois Governor Blagojevich was publicly humiliated by being arrested on a federal corruption charge stemming from illegally attempting to broker a deal to fill a vacant seat in the Senate, President-Elect Barack Obama has broken his silence, not his distance, on the scandal.

Obama spokesman Robert Gibbs reported late Wednesday that President-Elect Obama “agrees with (Illinois) Lt. Governor Pat Quin and many others that under the circumstances it is difficult for the Governor to effectively do his job and serve the people of Illinois.”

Further distancing himself from the scandal of the senate seat for sale to the highest bidder that once belonged to him, President-Elect Obama suggested that lawmakers “should put in place a process to select a new senator that have the trust and confidence of the people of Illinois.”

Also mentioned in the FBI documentation as “candidate number 5,” is Rep. Jesse Jackson, Jr. In a press conference held Wednesday, Jackson denied having any involvement in brokering a financial deal to obtain the vacant senate seat. Admitting to having met with Gov. Blagojevich to discuss his possible appointment to the Senate, Jackson adamantly denied any wrong doing or knowledge thereof.

Saaay Whaaat? Detroit Church Prays For Big Three With Auto Products On Stage! God’s Word Becomes A Hustle! Shame!

Bishop Charles Ellis Prays Over Big Three

Bishop Charles Ellis Prays Over Big Three

As automotive employees and executives wait anxiously for the White House and Congress to pass an emergency bill that will reportedly save GM, Ford and Chrysler from a total collapse, Bishop Charles Ellis of Detroit’s Greater Grace Temple has taken a giant step in lending his brand of ministerial support to his parishioners.

In a move of sheer ridiculous proportions, that has some thinking that Ellis has gone entirely off in left field, the supportive cleric held what could be called a religious rally Sunday that culminated in a prayer over several SUV’s driven unto the church stage.
“We have never seen as midnight an hour as we face this week…  this week, lives are hanging above an abyss of uncertainty as both houses of Congress decide whether to extend a helping hand,” Ellis told his congregation.

But the question has to be asked: Are today’s ministers using the pulpit to pimp their own interests? Has God’s Word become a hustle with an enormous financial payoff?

Supporting the Greater Grace congregational members through this nail-biter of a situation is what Bishop Ellis’ job entails. It is true that the future of Detroit and its’ citizens hangs in the balance. No doubt about it. But a blatant display of over the top ridiculousness in the name of God shrouded as so-called ‘support’ does not make a bad situation doable. What Bishop Ellis accomplished was once again shining a gigantic negative spotlight on the city of Detroit.

This stunt wasn’t seen on the national news channels and wires as an act of support for the Big Three. It was looked upon as an act of buffoonery and another flamboyant African American man of the cloth with questionable judgement. Can you say Jeremiah Wright? Has Greater Grace Temple seen such a dramatic drop in tithes that it has to resort to Hollywood-like circus tricks?

Bishop Charles Ellis should be ashamed of his behavior and apparent fleecing of his congregation. It is obvious that his ministry is nothing more than a hustle. If it is something more, why would several SUV’s hold center court alongside the religious symbol of the Holy Cross? Does Bishop Ellis believe that Jesus Christ approved of the Sunday performance that upstaged the ‘worship’ of Him? How does Bishop Ellis reconcile the mere mixing of the secular with the spiritual? Didn’t Christ say that if we “seek thine Kingdom first, all other things will be added to you?”

Maybe Bishop Ellis never read that portion of his Bible. Supporting your parishioners and the city of Detroit through a difficult time is one thing, Bishop Ellis. Turning the Word of God into a shady, embarrassing financial hustle, is an entirely different matter. But I shouldn’t be surprised…Bishop Ellis’ wife is one of the top Mary Kay National Directors in the country. How?

The majority of Greater Grace’s congregation were recruited by and  sell Mary Kay Cosmetics for Greater Grace’s First Lady.

Hmmm.

BREAKING NEWS! OJ Simpson To More Than Likely Spend The Rest Of His LIfe In Prison!

OJ Simpson

OJ Simpson

In a Nevada courtroom Friday Afternoon, OJ Simpson was sentenced to sixteen to twenty years in a state prison. His co-defendant, Clarence Stewart, was given the same sentence. Both could see a parole board in six to seven and a half years.

OJ Simpson tried to play down his role in the September, 2007 incident saying that “I didn’t mean to hurt anybody. I didn’t want to steal anything from anybody. I just wanted my stuff. I wasn’t there to hurt any of these guys…I thought that I was confronting friends to retreive my items. I was stupid.”

Even though Judge Jackie Glass made clear that her sentencing had absolutely nothing to do with the outcome of the Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman murder trial thirteen years ago, the Goldman family were present in the courtroom and in a press conference held immediately held after the sentencing, Kim Goldman stated that it was their efforts that made Simpson desperate enough to commit burglary.

Judge Glass said that Clarence Stewart was apparently “caught up” in the September, 2007 medley; yet Stewart received the same sentence as Simpson.

Time Will Reveal: The Inner Pain And Turmoil Of DeBarge

DeBarge
DeBarge

Wednesday evening, DeBarge fans received a bittersweet gift, courtesy of TVONE’s salute to beloved R & B artists, “UNSUNG.” For one hour, we were entranced, seduced, awed and deeply saddened by the retrospective on the famed, but troubled DeBarge family. Growing up in Detroit, the DeBarge siblings were hometown heroes that a lot of us teens could relate to. Unfortunately, most of us could relate to the family in an unparalleled way.

I remember vividly listening and singing along with my stereo system, complete with a record player and large double speakers. El’s sweet and heartbroken voice spoke to me, as it did to a lot of us. Bunny’s soprano coupled with the pain and anguish in her voice on ‘A Dream’ was haunting and I could feel her torment on so many levels.
We all heard and joked about the many brushes with the law that the DeBarge brothers have had with the criminal justice system and drug addiction. It seemed unconscionable and incomprehensible to DeBarge fans worldwide and in their hometown of Detroit/Grand Rapids for the DeBarge siblings to have conquered their poverty-stricken past in the ‘hood, only to have fallen into the claws of the streets. Who would have thought to have wondered whether or not that was a cracked-out Bobby DeBarge walking the ‘hoods of Detroit in the early afternoon? Yet, it was. I saw him up close and personal.
The DeBarge siblings first told their story in VIBE magazine. What a compelling testimony! But to actually listen to the horrors of their childhood spill forth from their own lips was a startling harsh reality. While they were performing on the Bandstand and Soul Train, on the covers of Right On! and Teen Beat, touring the local record shops and department stores, these siblings were carrying around the mental anguish and torment that comes from being physically, emotionally and sexually abused.
They grew up in an extremely violent household that offered no parental haven. Bunny DeBarge mentioned in the “UNSUNG” piece that the DeBarge children couldn’t even “trust” their mother to save them from the despicable clutches of their father. Which is why when the musical group DeBarge were at their peak and riding high on the charts and popularity, they became their own worst enemy.
The pain that the DeBarge siblings carried around was felt in their most complex love songs and in their personal lives. Drug abuse helped to numb the pain of feeling unloved, unwanted, misunderstood, abused and alone. The adulation and the roar of the crowd could not save them from hearing their father’s angered voice, their mother’s terrified screams, nor their own tears from suffering through sexual molestation.
That is why it appears that DeBarge is an ‘unsung’ talented group of musicians and composers. The DeBarge nightmare was inescapable. Little did we know as fans that the DeBarge family was just like us. They were us. They are us.
Here’s to hoping that the DeBarge siblings find a way to cope with their demons before it destroys what remains of them. Sometimes those voices and old memories can become overwhelming. But with counseling and psychological assistance, those demons can be tamed. Not erased. Tamed. So, the next time you hear that a DeBarge has been arrested and jailed, courtesy of a drug habit, instead of laughing and pointing what once was or appeared to be, see the truth for what it is. Pray that each of the DeBarge siblings conquer their demons before it conquers them.

BREAKING NEWS: Hudson’s Estranged Brother-In-Law Charged In Family Members Deaths!

William Balfour

William Balfour

From The Associated Press News Wire:

CHICAGO (AP) — Police arrested the estranged brother-in-law of Jennifer Hudson on Monday in the deaths of the entertainer’s mother, brother and young nephew, taking him from a prison where he had been held on a suspected parole violation.

William Balfour was arrested at Stateville Correctional Center and released to detectives as he awaited formal charges in the shooting deaths of the singer and Oscar-winning actress’ relatives, said Chicago police spokeswoman Monique Bond.

Until Monday, police had identified Balfour, 27, only as a “person of interest” in the investigation. He had not been charged by Monday evening, said Andy Conklin, a spokesman for the Cook County state’s attorney’s office.

The bodies of Jennifer Hudson’s mother, Darnell Hudson Donerson, and brother, Jason Hudson, were discovered Oct. 24 at the family’s home on the South Side of Chicago. The body of 7-year-old Julian King was found three days later in a sport utility vehicle on the West Side. All three had been shot.

Police took Balfour into custody the same day the bodies of Donerson and Hudson were discovered. After 48 hours – the longest Chicago police can hold a person without charges – Balfour was taken by the Illinois Department of Corrections on the suspected parole violation.

Balfour – Julian’s stepfather and the estranged husband of Jennifer Hudson’s older sister, Julia Hudson – served seven years for a 1999 attempted murder and vehicular hijacking conviction.

His mother, Michelle Davis-Balfour of Chicago, told reporters outside a police station Monday night that authorities don’t have a case against her son.

“If they found gun powder on his hands, you got a case; if they found a gun on him, he had a case; if they found a fingerprint on the truck that he did this, you got a case; but they don’t have nothing,” Davis-Balfour said.

Balfour had refused to take a lie-detector test and stopped cooperating with detectives, according to a police official who was not authorized to discuss the case publicly and spoke on condition of anonymity.

Police have confirmed they found the gun used in the killings. The .45-caliber gun was discovered Oct. 29 in a vacant lot in the West Side neighborhood where the King’s body was found a few days earlier.

Bond declined to discuss any evidence Monday. But after a hearing at the prison, the chairman of the Illinois Prisoner Review Board said a woman had told authorities that a gun used in the slayings was “identical” to the gun that was recovered.

At the time, board Chairman Jorge Montes said the evidence was key to a decision finding probable cause that Balfour violated his parole and should remain locked up pending a Dec. 3 hearing before a review board panel.

Balfour did not have an attorney at the November hearing, and the Cook County public defender’s office said at the time that nobody from the office had been assigned because he was not formally charged with a crime.

No one in the public defender’s office was assigned to Balfour’s case late Monday, and it’ was not clear whether he had other representation.

Christine Beatty Takes The Deal! Pleads Guilty In Detroit Sex Text Message Scandal! Begs Detroiters For “Forgiveness”

Christine Beatty Pleads Guilty In Detroit

Christine Beatty Pleads Guilty In Detroit

SOUTHFIELD — She famously rolled her eyes and struck a defiant pose throughout the whistle-blower lawsuit against her and her former boss. But Christine Beatty broke into tears and spoke of contrition today during a press conference at her attorney’s office.

“I am extremely sorry for all the people who were harmed in this ordeal,” said Beatty, former chief of staff for ex-mayor Kwame Kilpatrick, as she read a prepared statement. Beatty spoke at attorney Mayer Morganroth’s Southfield office.

Beatty pleaded guilty earlier today to two counts of obstructing justice for lying on the witness stand during a police whistle-blower lawsuit in the text message scandal. As part of the plea deal with Wayne County Prosecutors, Beatty will serve a 120-day jail sentence; remain on probation for five years; and pay $100,000 restitution to the city.

She explained why she took the deal, saying, “After many long months, I decided to end this ordeal. I decided not to go through that, and not take a chance … of being there for my daughters.”

Beatty said she wanted to “especially apologize to the people of the great city of Detroit. I am truly sorry. Detroit is my home, and I hope one day the work that was accomplished will eventually show through.”

To her supporters, Beatty said, “Please continue to pray for me and my family,” and she gave a special thanks “to my mother, my family, my church family and my friends. You have stuck by me at every turn and I could not have made it through a single day without you. I thank God you were with me during that time.

“This has been a very trying time but also a very spiritual one.”

Announcement of National Security Team

December 1, 2008

Chicago, Illinois

Good morning. Last week, we announced our economic team, which is working as we speak to craft an Economic Recovery Program to create jobs and grow our struggling economy. Today, Vice President-elect Biden and I are pleased to announce our national security team.

The national security challenges we face are just as grave – and just as urgent – as our economic crisis. We are fighting two wars. Old conflicts remain unresolved, and newly assertive powers have put strains on the international system. The spread of nuclear weapons raises the peril that the world’s deadliest technology could fall into dangerous hands. Our dependence on foreign oil empowers authoritarian governments and endangers our planet.

America must also be strong at home to be strong abroad. We need to provide education and opportunity for our citizens, so every American can compete with anyone, anywhere. And our economic power must sustain our military strength, our diplomatic leverage, and our global leadership.

The common thread linking these challenges is the fundamental reality that in the 21st century, our destiny is shared with the world’s. From our markets to our security; from our public health to our climate –we must act with the understanding that, now more than ever, we have a stake in what happens across the globe. And as we learned so painfully on 9/11, terror cannot be contained by borders, nor safety provided by oceans alone.

Last week, we were reminded of this threat once again when terrorists took the lives of six American among nearly 200 victims in Mumbai. In the world we seek, there is no place for those who kill innocent civilians to advance hateful extremism. This weekend, I told Prime Minister Singh that Americans stand with the people of India in this dark time. And I am confident that India’s great democracy is more resilient than killers who would tear it down.

And so, in this uncertain world, the time has come for a new beginning – a new dawn of American leadership to overcome the challenges of the 21st century, and to seize the opportunities embedded in those challenges. We will strengthen our capacity to defeat our enemies and support our friends. We will renew old alliances and forge new and enduring partnerships. We will show the world once more that America is relentless in defense of our people, steady in advancing our interests, and committed to the ideals that shine as a beacon to the world: democracy and justice; opportunity and unyielding hope – because American values are America’s greatest export to the world.

To succeed, we must pursue a new strategy that skillfully uses, balances, and integrates all elements of American power: our military and diplomacy; our intelligence and law enforcement; our economy and the power of our moral example. The team that we have assembled here today is uniquely suited to do just that.

In their past service and plans for the future, these men and women represent all of those elements of American power, and the very best of the American example. They have served in uniform and as diplomats; they have worked as legislators, law enforcement officials, and executives. They share my pragmatism about the use of power, and my sense of purpose about America’s role as a leader in the world.

I have known Hillary Clinton as a friend, a colleague, a source of counsel, and as a campaign opponent. She possesses an extraordinary intelligence and toughness, and a remarkable work ethic. I am proud that she will be our next Secretary of State. She is an American of tremendous stature who will have my complete confidence; who knows many of the world’s leaders; who will command respect in every capitol; and who will clearly have the ability to advance our interests around the world.

Hillary’s appointment is a sign to friend and foe of the seriousness of my commitment to renew American diplomacy and restore our alliances. There is much to do – from preventing the spread of nuclear weapons to Iran and North Korea, to seeking a lasting peace between Israel and the Palestinians, to strengthening international institutions. I have no doubt that Hillary Clinton is the right person to lead our State Department, and to work with me in tackling this ambitious foreign policy agenda.

At a time when we face an unprecedented transition amidst two wars, I have asked Robert Gates to continue as Secretary of Defense, and I’m pleased that he’s accepted. Two years ago, he took over the Pentagon at a difficult time. He restored accountability. He won the confidence of military commanders, and the trust of our brave men and women in uniform, and their families. He earned the respect of members of Congress on both sides of the aisle for his pragmatism and competence. He knows that we need a sustainable national security strategy – and that includes a bipartisan consensus at home.

As I said throughout the campaign, I will be giving Secretary Gates and our military a new mission as soon as I take office: responsibly ending the war in Iraq through a successful transition to Iraqi control. We will also ensure that we have the strategy – and resources – to succeed against al Qaeda and the Taliban. As Bob said not too long ago, Afghanistan is where the war on terror began, and it is where it must end. And going forward, we will continue to make the investments necessary to strengthen our military and increase our ground forces to defeat the threats of the 21st century.

Eric Holder has the talent and commitment to succeed as Attorney General from his first day on the job, which is even more important in a transition that demands vigilance. He has distinguished himself as a prosecutor, a Judge, and a senior official, and he is deeply familiar with the law enforcement challenges we face– from terrorism to counter-intelligence; from white collar crime to public corruption.

Eric also has the combination of toughness and independence that we need at the Justice Department. Let me be clear: the Attorney General serves the American people. And I have every expectation that Eric will protect our people, uphold the public trust, and adhere to our Constitution.

Janet Napolitano offers the experience and executive skill that we need in the next Secretary of Homeland Security. She has spent her career protecting people – as a US Attorney, an Attorney General, and as Governor of Arizona. She understands the need for a Department of Homeland Security that has the capacity to help prevent terrorist attacks and respond to catastrophe – be it manmade or natural.

Janet assumes this critical role having learned the lessons – some of them painful – of the last several years, from 9/11 to Katrina. She insists on competence and accountability. She knows firsthand the need to have a partner in Washington that works well with state and local governments. She understands as well as anyone the danger of an unsecure border. And she will be a leader who can reform a sprawling Department while safeguarding our homeland.

Susan Rice will take on the crucial task of serving as Permanent Representative of the United States to the United Nations. Susan has been a close and trusted advisor. As in previous Administrations, the UN Ambassador will serve as a member of my cabinet and integral member of my team. Her background as a scholar, on the National Security Council, and Assistant Secretary of State will serve our nation well at the United Nations.

Susan knows that the global challenges we face demand global institutions that work. She shares my belief that the UN is an indispensable – and imperfect – forum. She will carry the message that our commitment to multilateral action must be coupled with a commitment to reform. We need the UN to be more effective as a venue for collective action – against terror and proliferation; climate change and genocide; poverty and disease.

Finally, I am convinced that General James Jones is uniquely suited to be a strong and skilled National Security Advisor. Generations of Joneses have served heroically on the battlefield – from the beaches of Tarawa in World War II, to Foxtrot Ridge in Vietnam. Jim’s Silver Star is a proud part of that legacy. He will bring to the job the dual experience of serving in uniform and as a diplomat. He has commanded a platoon in battle, served as Supreme Allied Commander in a time of war, and worked on behalf of peace in the Middle East.

Jim is focused on the threats of today and the future. He understands the connection between energy and national security, and has worked on the frontlines of global instability – from Kosovo to northern Iraq to Afghanistan. He will advise me and work effectively to integrate our efforts across the government, so that we are effectively using all elements of American power to defeat unconventional threats and promote our values.

I am confident that this is the team that we need to make a new beginning for American national security. This morning, we met to discuss the situation in Mumbai and some of the challenges that we face in the months and years ahead.  In the coming weeks, I will be in close contact with these advisors, who will be working with their counterparts in the Bush Administration to make sure that we are ready to hit the ground running on January 20. Given the range of threats that we face – and the vulnerability that can be a part of every presidential transition – I hope that we can proceed swiftly for those national security officials who demand confirmation.

We move forward with the humility that comes with knowing that there are brave men and women protecting us on the front lines. Troops serving their second, third, or fourth tours. Diplomats and intelligence officers in dangerous corners of the world. FBI agents in the field, cops on the beat, prosecutors in our courts, and cargo inspectors at our ports. These selfless Americans whose names are unknown to most of us will form the backbone of our effort. If we serve as well as they do, we will protect our country and promote our values.

And we move forward with respect for America’s tradition of a bipartisan national security policy, and a commitment to national unity. When it comes to keeping our nation and our people safe, we are not Republicans and we are not Democrats: we are Americans. There is no monopoly of power or wisdom in either party. Together, as one nation, as one people, we can shape our times instead of being shaped by them. Together, we will meet the challenges of the 21st century not with fear, but with hope.

Now, before I take questions, I’d like to invite my team to say a few words, starting with my friend Hillary Clinton. Thank you.
